Traditionally, Raksha Bandhan is a festival to celebrate the relationship of brother and sister. But according to history, meaning of Rakhi is not just limited to brothers and sisters. In history it was just act as a bond of protection and could be tied by wife, mother or daughter. Rishi’s also used to tie Rakhi to people who came to get their blessings. Some people also used to tie Rakhi to their neighbours and friends to have a peaceful relationship.

Raksha Bandhan (on Shravan purnima) meaning "The tie or knot of protection"  


Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that celebrates the love and responsibility between brothers and sisters. It is Celebrated on Hindu month Shravan purnima.  Raksha Bandhan in Sanskrit literally means "the tie or knot of protection". So, on this day, brothers make promise to their sisters that they will save her from all difficulty and problems. On this day, both brothers and sisters pray for the happiness and well-being of each other.  Sisters pray to God for well-being of their brothers and to save him from all the difficult situations. To show their love, sisters tie a silk thread on wrist of her brother. Sisters also observe fast for their brothers.
            The sisters tie a blessed thread of love to their brothers amongst chanting of mantras, put kanku and rice on their forehead and pray for their well being. Sisters bestow their brothers with gifts and blessings. Brother also wishes them a good life and pledge to take care of them. Brothers give their sisters return gifts. The gift is the acknowledgment of his love for his sister
      The festival is observed by Hindus, Jains, and many Sikhs. Raksha Bandhan is primarily observed in India, Mauritius(FRENCH) and parts of Nepal. It is also celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs in parts of Pakistan, and by some people of Indian origin around the world. Any Indian festival seems to be incomplete without the traditional Indian festivities, such as gathering, celebrations, exchange of sweets and gifts, lots of noise, singing and dancing. Festivals are the celebration of togetherness as being as a united family and the festival "Raksha Bandhan" is not an exception of this.
